L'histoire des 24 Heures du Mans débute le 26 mai 1923 à 16 heures. Cette toute nouvelle épreuve, créée par l'Automobile Club de l'Ouest, cinq ans après la fin de la Grande Guerre, a l'originalité d'opposer des voitures de série sur 24 heures non-stop pour tester leur fiabilité et leurs performances. Walter Owen Bentley, jeune patron de la marque éponyme, a engagé une voiture. Bien que ses pilotes aient échoué au pied du podium, il est maintenant convaincu de l'intérêt technique et commercial de cette épreuve hors normes.
Il a donc bien l'intention de revenir pour gagner avec ses Bentley Boys.
